Hot Water Music – A Flight And A Crash

‘A Flight And A Crash’ was one of the first Hot Water Music releases I got. It has been in high rotation ever since. This was their first record on Epitaph. The emotional intensity is a little less frantic and the musicianship is extremely tight and cleaned up a touch. All in all, this album is a little more focused than their previous ones.

Leatherface / Hot Water Music – BYO Split Series Volume 1

This is the first in a series of great split releases. When I bought this I was heavily into Avail and Hot Water Music and had herd good things about Leatherface. I figured this would be prefect, 5 Hot Water Music tunes and 6 tunes will be enough of a first taste of this Leatherface band.

Turns out that Leatherface are insanely good. I don’t think anyone’s voice can be more gravely and weathered than Frankie Stubbs’. Coming from Sunderland in North East England, they sound like Hüsker Dü being dragged through gravel. Raw, raspy and full of melody. I really need to get more of Leatherface’s releases!

Leatherface almost eclipse Hot Water Music’s side of things. Their 5 songs are powerful and passionate. Everything you want and expect from Hot Water Music. They will have you singing along in a matter of seconds.

If you love gruff and melodic punk rock then this is the record for you!

FFO: Hüsker Dü and Avail

Madonna – Cherish 7” (black/???)

1989 single via Sire. A-side is ‘Cherish’ which was the third single from the album ‘Like a Prayer’. The B-side is ‘Supernatural’.

Madonna – Live To Tell 7” (black / ???)

1986 single via Sire Records. This single was taken from the album ‘True Blue’ and the film ‘At Close Range’. The B-side is one of those annoying B-sides that’s an instrumental version of the A-side. They Mayas well have left the B-side blank.

The Knack – My Sharona 7” (black / ???)

1979 single for the irritatingly catchy song ‘My Sharona’ from the album ‘Get The Knack’ by The Knack. The B-side is ‘Let Me Out’.

Elton John – Island Girl 7” (black / ???)

1975 single for ‘Island Girl’, a song about a prostitute in New York City and a man who wants to take that prostitute back to Jamaica. The B-side is ‘Sugar On The Floor’.

I Call Fives – First Things First

Pop punk from New Jersey. This is way too sugary and sunny for me. I Call Fives toured Australia with Heroes For Hire as well. All this doesn’t prompt me to search for any more of their releases.

FFO: New Found Glory, Fireworks and Hit The Lights

Hot Water Music – Moonpies for Misfits

Compiling the ‘Moments Pass’ and ‘Where We Belong’ 7”s into the one place.

FFO: Avail, Leatherface and Fugazi

Hot Water Music – Live At The Hardback LP (purple mush / 230)

Recorded in 1999 during a show at the Hardback Café at what was thought to be Hot Water Music’s last show. This recording captures the energy and urgency that Hot Water Music play with, but it doesn’t compare to actually being there and seeing the band play live with all your friends.

Hot Water Music – No Division LP (light purple / 195)

I’ve already posted about this record as well but I thought I would just post picture. I think this was part of the 2nd pressing.

Billy Joel – Uptown Girl 7” (black / ???)

1983 single from the album ‘An Innocent Man’. A-side ‘Uptown Girl’ is a catchy song. It’s harmless. I don’t mind it.  B-side is ‘Careless Talk’.

The Human League – Love Action (I Believe In Love) 7” (black / ???)

Synthpop from 1981. The A-side ‘Love Action (I Believe In Love)’ can be found on the 1981 album ‘Dare’. The B-side is ‘Hard Times’. The single is labelled red according to The Human League’s labelling system, making this a dance track.

I’m bored by this.

Internal Rot – Internal Rot 7” (grey / ???)

Brutal grindcore from Melbourne, Australia featuring members of Roskopp, Agents of Abhorrence and Superfunhappyslide.

Pick up this 7”!

Hot Water Music – The Fire, The Steel, The Tread 7” (translucent blue / ???)

Two new tracks from Hot Water Music through a self released 7”.

The A Side is ‘The Fire, The Steel, The Tread’, a reworked and rocked up version of the Chuck Ragan solo song. The B Side, ‘Up To Nothing’ is headed by Chris Wollard and wouldn’t go astray from Wollard’s work in The Draft or from ‘The New What Next’.

Its great to see Hot Water Music finally back and writing again. Even though these tracks are not the best the band have ever written they are no disappointment by any means. It is also great to see Scott Sinclair doing the artwork for the 7” as well.

FFO: Avail, Leatherface, Chuck Ragan and Chris Wollard And The Ship Thieves

Hot Water Music – Moments Pass 7” (black / ???)

Two tracks (A Side ‘Moments Pass’ and B Side ‘Another Way’) that would later appear with the ‘Where We Belong 7” on the ‘Moonpies For Misfits’ EP. What’s not to love about Hot Water Music?

FFO: Avail, Leatherface and Fugazi

Hot Water Music – Forever and Counting LP (white / 525)

Packed full of raw energy, passion and emotion Hot Water Music’s third full length is one of their best. The gruff melodies and unrefined harmonies will leave you craving more.

FFO: Avail, Leatherface and Fugazi

Hot Water Music / Rydell – Split 7” (black / 1,005)

This is another find from Black Wire Records. I bought this split for the Hot Water Music side, not having herd of Rydell before. This is the second pressing of this split released by Scene Police in 1998.
On the Hot Water Music side of things we have ‘Just Don’t Say You Lost It’. This has to be one of my favourite Hot Water songs. The track appears on the ‘Forever and Counting’ LP so if you can’t track this 7” down just buy the album.
Rydell come from Susses in the UK. Their song ‘Try Seventeen’ is in a similar emotional punk rock vein as Hot Water Music just not a gruff.

FFO: Avail, Leatherface, Small Brown Bike and Fugazi

Hot Water Music – Alachua 7” (black / 1,000)

I picked this 7” up from Black Wire Records while hanging out and watching bands. This is the first pressing of this single put out through Allied Recordings with the A Side ‘Alachua’ and the B Side ‘Never Ender’. Two great Hot Water Music tracks. If you can’t track down a copy of this single both tracks can be found on the ‘Never Ender’ comp.

FFO: Avail, Leatherface and Fugazi

Hot Water Music – You Can Take the Boy Out of Bradenton 7" (black / ???)

I picked this up from Black Wire Records while flicking through the 7”s when I went to see F’Tang and In Sepia play.
Schematic Records released this two song 7” in 1996. I’m pretty sure this is the first pressing. The artwork by Scott Sinclair is great (as per usual) and the jacket is a cool fold out. The A Side is ‘You Can Take the Boy Out of Bradenton’ and the B Side is ‘Hate Mail Comes in August’. This is a pretty good find I think.

FFO: Avail, Leatherface and Fugazi

Hot Water Music – Fuel For The Hate Game

‘Fuel For The Hate Game’ is one of those rare records that is so powerful and honest its absurd.  Hot Water Music really nailed it for their second full length.

A lot of people will also remember ‘Freight Liner’ which appeared on Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4.

FFO: Avail, Leatherface and Fugazi

Hüsker Dü – Candy Apple Grey

Released in 1986, ‘Candy Apple Grey’ is Hüsker Dü’s fifth album and first with major label Warner Bros.
This is an amazing record. For starters the songs actually make you feel something! ‘Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely’, ‘Sorry Somehow’ and ‘Hardly Getting Over It’ all make you feel something. The song writing is great and the songs are full of passion and honesty as well. On top of it all they are so damn catchy! I challenge you to listen to this and not have it stuck in your head for weeks afterwards.

FFO: Sonic Youth and Fucked Up

Hot Water Music – Finding The Rhythms LP + 7” (translucent purple LP + black 7” / 200)

I’ve already posted about this record but I thought I would post some pictures. This is the 13th pressing (I think).

Descendents – Liveage! LP (black / ???)

Recorded on July 13, 1987 at First Avenue in Minneapolis during Milo’s final tour with Descendents before pursuing a career in biochemistry.
I’m not usually a fan of live albums. Only a select few have stolen my heart, most notably Ramones’ ‘It’s Alive’ and Against Me!’s ‘Americans Abroad!!! Live In London!!!’.
Livage! is a perfect live album. The band is tight and passionate, the set list is an actual setlist, not a best of and the recording sounds like I’m actually there.

QUA QUA, QUA QUA!

Bad Religion – The Dissent of Man

The writing and recording process for Bad Religion’s fifteenth album took 2 years. ‘The Dissent of Man’ proves that Bad Religion is not going anywhere, if anything they are getting stronger. The melody and aggression is still there after all these years.

LLAAFF – EP

Kids, this is why you don’t do drugs.

FFO: Pasta beer, fruit and weed

Hot Snakes – Suicide Invoice LP (black / ???)

Raw and stripped to basics punk rock n roll at it’s best.

Play this loud!

FFO: Rocket From The Crypt and Drive Like Jehu

Bad Religion – New Maps Of Hell

‘New Maps Of Hell’ is Bad Religion’s fourteenth album. Taking a heavier approach this time with a wall of sound that will knock any doubt that Bad Religion have slowed down at all over their 27 years as a band.

Bad Religion – The Process of Belief

Released in 2002, ‘The Process of Belief’ is Bad Religion’s twelfth album. Brett Gurewitz returns to guitar and Brooks Wackerman, of Suicidal Tendencies and The Vandals, takes over drums. With Graffin and Gurewitz reunited and writing together again this album meets expectations and is a punk rock masterpiece.

Bad Religion – Against The Grain

Packed full of classic Bad Religion punk rock, ‘Against The Grain’ is a classic in terms of both punk records and 90’s records. ‘Against The Grain’ was Bad Religion’s fifth album and last with Pete Finestone on drums.
