The Get Up Kids/Coalesce – Split 7” (split)

This is a pretty interesting split. A metalcore band and a pop punk band covering each others’ songs.
The Get Up Kids play a version of Coalesce’s ‘Harvest of Maturity’ which they named ‘Burned Bridges’ and Coalesce play a version of The Get Up Kids’ ‘Second Place’, which they named ‘I’m Giving Up On This One’.
Each band plays in their own style and makes the songs their own. The artwork is pretty cool as well.

The Get Up Kids – Eudora

This album is a compilation of B-sides, covers and previously unreleased tracks. If you like The Get Up Kids then this is a good edition to your collection, however, if you’re not a fan or just getting into them then this isn’t a necessity.

The Get Up Kids – Something To Write Home About LP (purple)

This was one of the records that shaped high school for me. I love this record so much.

This is the 10th anniversary vinyl release of ‘Something To Write Home About’ which is amazing, but I’m a little annoyed. My girlfriend and my sister both bought the CD version of this reissue. This CD package comes with a DVD with a live performance from the anniversary show an, a download for the demos of the record and a neat little booklet with pictures and lyrics. The vinyl release comes in a gatefold sleeve, neat artwork, purple wax and lyrics, but it would’ve been nice if they at least threw in the download for the demos.

The Getaway Plan – Where The City Meets The Sea (single)

Boring!

The Get Up Kids – Four Minute Mile LP (clear)

Energetic and youthful pop punk with an emotional edge. This album is raw and rough and the songs are simply amazing.

Buy this album, sing along as loud as you can and pretend to be a carefree teenager again.

The Get Up Kids – The Eps: Red Letter Day and Woodson

This CD brings together the Woodson (1997) and Red Letter Day (1999) EPs together in the one place.
The rough and raw emotional pop-punk on these EPs is amazing.

Civil War Rust – The Good Book EP

This is a pretty solid EP from this rocky punk band. You can find this up for free download from Death To False Hope Records.

FFO: American Steel, Red City Radio and Why I Hate

The Getaway Plan – Hold Conversation

I find this screamo stuff so frustrating to listen to.

The Getaway Plan – Demo

I picked this up years ago for free when they used to be smaller. I didn’t really like this too much then and in hindsight I probably should’ve left this on the merch table. They do go for abit on Ebay though.

Gaza – I Don’t Care Where I Go When I Die

This is scary! Heavy, destructive and chaotic metal.

FFO: Converge, The Stockholm Syndrome and 4 Dead

The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang LP (black)

This record sees The Gaslight Anthem starting to change organically. The classic Americana is pushing though a little bit more and the punk is starting to be pushed back a touch.
I was very surprised to see how big this band has gotten when they toured with Soundwave this year. Seeing them play at The Annandale Hotel when they first toured and then seeing them play on a Soundwave stage with a packed audience with everyone getting into it was weird.

The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound

These songs grab you by the heart and make you nostalgic for times gone by. This album is consistent and sincere, combining rock, punk, soul and blues into something that is simply amazing. A must have.

The Gaslight Anthem – Tumbling Dice 7” (black/white/brown/blue)

On this single The Gaslight Anthem cover The Rolling Stones’ ‘Tumbling Dice’ on the A-side and on the B-side is an original, ‘She Loves You’.

I managed to get a hold of all four colours. The covers are silk-screened and the packaging is a neat fold out with the colour of the sleeve matching the colour of the vinyl.

The J. Geils Band – Centerfold 7” (black)

This is such a good song. It’s going to be stuck in my head for days.
The b-side on this is ‘Rage In The Cage'.

The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound 7” (clear)

This is another single for The Gaslight Anthem’s ‘The ’59 Sound’. This version has a b-side of a cover of Pearl Jam’s ‘State of Love and Trust’.

The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound 7” (black)

Anthematic punk rock with a distinctive American bluesy feel. The b-side is ‘Even Cowgirls Get The Blues’. Both of these songs can be found on ‘The ’59 Sound’ LP.

The Gaslight Anthem – SeƱor and the Queen 7” x2 (clear)

After releasing the amazing debut that was ‘Sink or Swim’ The Gaslight Anthem had set themselves a hard task at writing a follow up. With this 4 song EP they blew my expectations out of the water. These songs get underneath your skin and break your heart.
This is probably my favourite release by The Gaslight Anthem.

Gama Bomb – Citizen Brain (CD+ DVD)

Tongue in cheek thrash metal with a cross over vibe. With songs about video games, drinking zombies and just being metal what’s not to love about this?

The DVD on the other hand isn’t worth paying extra. All it is is some behind the scenes footage of them recording and half of a couple of live songs that would probably be on Youtube anyway.

Boy Sets Fire – This Crying, This Screaming, My Voice Is Being Born

This 6 song EP is one of the better Boy Sets Fire releases and also their debut. This release is emotionally and aggressive full on progressive hardcore. This release is also very politically and socially charged with the lyrics and their accompanying explanations.

At The Drive In – in/Casino/Out

I picked this up from Lawsons for $3! Lawsons is a good second hand place located at 380 Pitt Street, Sydney, they have CDs, DVDs and vinyl. Check them out.
I’m not sure why, but I have never actually bought an At The Drive In record until now. That was a stupid mistake. This would have ruled my high school years.
This album was recorded live in the studio and as a result is pretty raw and stripped down.
An absolutely great album by these post-punk/hardcore masters.

The Get Up Kids – Guilt Show

Like ‘On A Wire’, this album is more of an indie pop rock record with elements of their pop punk past shining through. There are some great songs on here but there are also songs which fail to hold my attention.

The Get Up Kids – On A Wire

How was this record ever going to follow up ‘Something To Write Home About’?
Instead of rewriting the same record they decided to grow up and change their sound accordingly. There are some great songs on this album. A part of me is glad that they didn't try and write another 'Something To Write Home About'.

Gallows – Grey Britain

Gallows have taken a dark turn with this record. This record paints a bleak and depressing picture of Britain. The band has come along way since their debut ‘Orchestra of Wolves’ and they have produced an all round better record as a result.

Gallows – Orchestra of Wolves

This is a pretty decent debut album. Simple and straight to the point British hardcore punk. The only thing that I didn’t like about this record was the overuse of unnecessary breakdowns

Various Artists – David’s Town LP (black /2000)

I HAVE FINALLY FINISHED F!!!!
This is Fucked Up’s offering for Record Store Day this year. At first glance/listen I wasn’t quite sure what this was. Is this Fucked Up putting together a compilation? Is this the next instalment for their David character? Is this just the band playing a joke and messing with us?

It turns out that this is a fake compilation of artists from Byrdesdale Spa, UK, David’s home town. Each band is Fucked Up playing under different names. What makes this so much more believable is that each band has a description and some ‘facts’.
The songs are awesome! Go download this.

Track listing:

  1. Porcelain on Porcelain – Byrdesdale Spa FC
  2. Crown and Criers – Garden City
  3. Gacy and the Boys – My Old Man’s a Ginger
  4. Redstockings – Unrequited Love
  5. Animal Man – Do You Feed? (The Curry Song)
  6. The Wavy Originals – Fake Moments (of True Love)
  7. Grain – Light Rain
  8. In Good Company – Harmony’s Double
  9. Hateful Coil – Bull Thunder
  10. Das SchwƤche - Das SchwƤche
  11. Wonderer – It’s Hard To Be A Dad

Get Bent – Demo

Pop punk that is rough around the edges, plus it’s up for free download on If You Make It, so you know that it’s going to be good.

FFO: Thousandaires, Iron Chic, Latterman

Gentlemen Husbands – Mirror Doll Business

I can imagine seeing Gentlemen Husbands play in a grimy dive bar, getting way too drunk and making a bunch of bad decisions. These guys play stripped down rock n’ roll the way it should be played. I’m not a huge fan of this style of rock but I found myself really enjoying this.

Download this from Juice Box Dot Com.

FFO: Snake skin boots, whiskey and double denim

Title Fight – Shed 7” (black flexi)

This is the single of ‘Shed’ that came with the pre-order package for the album of the same name. This flexi is pretty cool for the way that the record is a square rather than a circle. ‘Shed’ is one of my favourite songs off the new album.
The b-side is an acoustic version of ‘Shed’.

Bad Brains – Pay To Cum 7” (black)

The debut Bad Brains 7” has been reissued for Record Store Day this year. I was way too excited for this. I managed to get a hold of the 7” on black wax. The reissue is also on green, red and gold. I’m not sure how many of these were pressed on black.

‘Pay To Cum’ has to be up there with my all time favourite Bad Brains songs. This reissue has the original artwork and lyric sheet which is pretty cool as well.

Various Artists – Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?

This tribute to The Beatles put together by Uncut has a varied assortment of bands offering their renditions of Beatles classics. Some good, some horrendous. Tiny Tim with Brave Combo’s cover of ‘Girl’ is possibly the worst thing I’ve ever herd in my life.

Who covers what:
  1. Echo & The Bunnymen – Ticket To Ride
  2. Lowell Folson – Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?
  3. 801 featuring Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno – Tomorrow Never Knows
  4. Teenage Fanclub – Tell Me What You See
  5. Otis Redding – Daytripper
  6. Siouxsie & The Banshees – Helter Skelter
  7. Nils Lofgren – Anytime At All
  8. Junior Parker – Taxman
  9. The Damned – Help
  10. Marianne Faithful – I’m A Loser
  11. Gene – Don’t Let Me Down
  12. Al Green – I Wanna Hold Your Hand
  13. Tiny Tim with Brave Combo – Girl
  14. 10CC – Across The Universe
  15. Billy Bragg – Revolution
  16. Laibach – One After 909
  17. Joe Cocker – I’ll Cry Instead
  18. Rainer – Within You, Without You
  19. Chris Farlowe – Yesterday
  20. Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel – Here Comes The Sun
  21. Peter Sellers – She Loves You
  22. Lord Sitar – Blue Jay Way
  23. Booker T & The MGs – I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
  24. Oasis – Helter Skelter

Built To Spill – Perfect From Now On

I can’t believe that I am only checking this band out now! I should have listened to my friends. These guys are by far one of the best alternative/indie rock bands that I have listened to.
I recommend that you pick this up.

The Gaslight Anthem – Sink or Swim

This band has gotten insanely big lately.  This album takes it back to when they had something to prove with more of a punk edge on their Springsteen bluesy punk-rock style.
Something that is great about The Gaslight Anthem’s albums is that I have played them to a bunch of my friends, friends who listen to punk, hardcore, metal, rock, hip hop, the radio etc and they all seem to love this band. I can’t think of many bands that I can show to these friends that we can all enjoy.

FFO: Bruce Springsteen, Hot Water Music, Lucero

Gay Paris – My First Wife? She was a Fox Queen CD single

I picked this single up from Blood Sweat and Beers at the beginning of the year. Gruff vocals and dirty, dirty southern swamp rock

FFO: Tom Waits, The Snowdroppers and Halal, How Are You?

Various Artists – Punk-O-Rama 4: Straight Outta The Pit

Gang Green – Another Wasted Night

Listening to this classic 80’s Boston punk rock record makes me want to grab a case, head to the skate park, get wasted and thrash up a storm. This is such a good album.

Furious/Incriminate 77 – Split 7” (black)

Furious play the same snotty hardcore punk rock that makes you want to skate all day. The music isn’t anything too special and the artwork is absolutely horrible on their side of the split.
The Incriminate 77 side is where it’s at. Pissed off hardcore punk.

Furious – 7” (black)

Snotty hardcore punk rock. I didn’t think that this was anything special. Got me in the mood to skate.

Artimus Pyle – Black Shroud EP

This was my introduction to Artimus Pyle after hearing so much about them.
I have listened to this EP through so many times. I'm really into their dark hardcore punk sound with some power violence and crust thrown in.
This was released in to support their Australian tour with Pisschrist. Pissed that I missed that.

Corey Price – Eve

Corey Price is a member of Newcastle’s Like…Alaska, now broken up, and now Easy Tiger.
These are quiet, acoustic songs in the vein of Bright Eyes and Elliot Smith.
