I Killed The Prom Queen – When Goodbye Means Forever

What was I thinking?

I Killed The Prom Queen / Parkway Drive – Split

2003 split between metalcore bands I Killed The Prom Queen and Parkway Drive. The only real reason to own a copy of this split is for the Parkway Drive tracks. It’s pretty damn hard to believe that I actually liked IKTPQ. Live and learn I guess.

I Killed The Prom Queen – Choose To Love, Live Or Die

Horrible. Just horrible.

Luca Brasi – Extended Family LP (translucent red w/ black smudge / ???)

Melodic punk rock from Tasmanian party punks Luca Brasi courtesy of Poison City Records. The type of punk you need to listen to with your friends while drinking and hanging out. Watch the video for ‘Theme Song For HQ’ and you will know what I’m talking about. I can’t get enough of this band. Poison City have their upcoming 7” ‘Tassie’ up for order now. Get on it!

Ivan and The Backpackers – Demo

Four tracks of raw and basic Australian hardcore punk rock. I picked this up for free from Black Wire Records.

Rick James – Dance Wit’ Me 7” (black / ???)

1982 single for ‘Dance Wit’ Me’ from the album ‘Throwin’ Down’. A-side is ‘Part1’ and the B-side is ‘Part 2’. The artwork for this 7” single is probably the best artwork for any single that has ever existed!

I Hate My Friends – Case Of The Mondays

Raw, melodic and poppy punk rock which can be downloaded for free from Death To False Hope Records. Poor mixing makes this recording suffer. I Hate My Friends existed between summer 2008 and February 2009 then had a name change to Buttons Aren't Toys, who existed between February 2009 and July 2009.

I Exist – Three Nails and a Book of Flaws 7” (clear / 100)

Now in it’s third pressing (see below link for the pre-order), I Exist’s ‘Three Nails and a Book of Flaws’ is packed with riffs galore. I Exist have developed their hardcore influenced metal that was seen on their demo (which I posted about earlier). This is a strong EP that Midnight Funeral used to launch their label. Check out both I Exist and Midnight Funeral’s releases.

Hüsker Dü – Metal Circus LP (black / ???)

Release in 1983 when Hüsker Dü where still much a hardcore punk band with their pop and melody coming through (‘It’s Not Funny Anymore’ is a great example). Five songs brimming with energy.

FFO: Sonic Youth, Black Flag and early SST releases.

Brand New – Your Favorite Weapon LP (black / ???)

Reissued on vinyl by Triple Crown Records and Razor and Tie for the 10th anniversary of ‘Your Favourite Weapon’. Te reissue includes remastered tracks, alternate artwork, gatefold sleeve and a download card with original demos.

This is a great reissue and a must have for fans of the band and pop punk in general.

FFO: Taking Back Sunday and Saves The Day

I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business - I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business

I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business is the side project of The Early November’s Ace Enders. Acoustic and full band songs are littered with background noise (eg television playing in the background) and full of melody and cleverly put together.

FFO: The Early November

Downpour – Demo

I saw Downpour when they ventured down to Sydney from Rockhampton, QLD with Sick People. I was really impressed and wanted to buy a copy of this on tape but the band didn’t have any more copies left. Fastcore, power violence, hardcore, whatever you want to call it, this is fast, raw and definitely worth checking out. 7 songs in just as many minutes.
The band has put this up for free download, along with a ‘Tour Teaser’, ‘The Anchor: Live 28/5/11’ and their tracks from ‘Split Scene Compilation’ (now in it’s second pressing. A highly recommended hardcore LP comp).

FFO: Extortion, Shackles and Sick People

Huntsman – It’s Just Four Songs

Featuring members of Toe To Toe, Last Nerve, No Apologies, Muta and Irrelevant. Huntsman played punk rock. They are now broken up.

FFO: Avail, NOFX

How We Are – To Teach A Hundred and One LP (black / ???)

‘To Teach A Hundred and One’ is a step up from the 2004 7” EP for the now defunct Rochester, New York melodic hardcore band How We Are. Better musicianship makes for better songs.

The vinyl pressing was released by Stop Whining, Start Winning Records and Secret Jams. The LP version comes with an unrealised track and a 16 page booklet.

FFO: Blue Monday, Champion and Miles Away.

Good Clean Fun – Who Shares Wins 7” (black / ???)

I picked this 7” up from a distro while at a show at Dirty Shirlows. Hardcore from Washington DC that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Fun and positive hardcore from 1998 advocates of straight edge, veganism, positivity and fun.

FFO: Gorilla Biscuits and H20

Hot Water Music – Till The Wheels Fall Off LP x2 (green / 625)

Hot Water Music’s second compilation record, this time bringing together tracks from compilations, splits (between Alkaline Trio and Leatherface), EPs (Moonpies For Misfits) and rarities.

Packaged well with double LP in a gatefold jacket with artwork by Scott Sinclair. There is plenty here for old and new fans.

FFO: Leatherface and Avail

Pat McGlynn – She’d Rather Be With Me 7” (black / ???)

1977 single for ‘She’d Rather Be With Me’ by the Bay City Rollers’ rhythm guitarist, Pat McGlynn. The B-side is ‘Street Walkin’ Girl’.

FFO: The Bay City Rollers and The Monkees

Massappeal – Chrisalidz 7” (black / ???)

Forming in 1985, Massapeal are a classic Australian hardcore punk band coming from Sydney. This 7” was released by Forge Records. On the A-side is ‘Chrisalidz’, which can be found on the album ‘The Mechanic’. The B-side has live versions of ‘Damage Zone’ and ‘Cactus’ recorded on August ’90 at Newcastle Palais Royal during the Anthrax Tour. Both these tracks can be found on the ‘Jazz’ album.

Do yourself a favour and find some Massappeal records.

FFO: The Hard-Ons and Black Flag

Engelbert Humperdinck – Engelbert LP (black / ???)

Songs about love for the oldies.

How We Are – How We Are 7” (black / ???)

I first herd about How We Are after getting into Polar Bear Club. I think they may have toured together, shared members or something, I can’t exactly remember. Plus, they seem to be named after a Lifetime song, so that was reason enough to check them out when I saw this 7” while flicking through the 7”s at Resist. How We Are came from Rochester, New York and broke up in broke up in 2007. This 7” was (as far as I can tell) their first release as well as the first release for Out Of Sight Records. Basically, How We Are playe(ed) melodic hardcore.

FFO: Blue Monday, Champion and Miles Away.

Hot Water Music – The New What Next

Even at their worst, Hot Water Music are better than the vast majority of bands out there.

Hot Water Music – Caution

With more melody and conviction than ever, Hot Water Music can not be stopped.

Hot Water Music / Alkaline Trio – Split 12” (picture disc / ???)

This would have to be my favourite split record. Released in 2002 by Jade Tree Records and No Idea Records. Both bands have two amazing original tracks and cover each other’s songs. Alkaline Trio cover Hot Water Music’s ‘Rooftops’ from ‘No Division’ while Hot Water Music cover two Alkaline Trio songs, ‘Radio’ (from ‘Maybe I’ll Catch Fire’) and ‘Bleeder’ (from ‘I Lied My Face Off’). The artwork on the picture disc provided by Scott Sinclair which could not be any better.

I cannot fault this record in the slightest. This is a must have for any fan of either Hot Water Music or Alkaline Trio.

Martika – I Feel The Earth Move 7” (black / ???)

1988 single of Martika’s version of Carole King’s song ‘I Feel The Earth Move’. The B-side is ‘Quiero Entregarte Mi Amor’. Not into this.

The Holy Mess – A Beginners Guide To The Sea

I picked this CD up from a sale box for like $2 thinking it was a band on Poison City Records. I was wrong. This isn’t bad for what I paid for it. Leaving Perth to relocate in Melbourne, The Holy Sea play downbeat rock with a country influence. Artwork by Edward J. Grug III.

Hot Water Music – Never Ender

2001 compilation album released by No Idea Records. Compiling songs from the 'Alachua' 7", 'Boy Out Of Bradenton' 7", 'Push for Coin' CD, and splits with Clairmel, Screaming Fat Rat, Six Going On Seven, and Tomorrow.

FFO: Leatherface and Avail

Nuclear Summer – Demo

I purchased a zine called ‘Collected Thoughts’ and when I received it in the mail this demo was slipped in. Coming from Brisbane, Nuclear Summer play noodly post punk/hardcore. I am pretty into this demo. They have since released an album, which I haven’t yet purchased. I managed to catch them play in Melbourne at The Tote. For some reason I wasn’t completely into them. Maybe due to being more excited about other bands playing on the bill or just not in the mood, I’m not sure.

FFO: Fires of Waco, Touché Amore and Grade

How Do We Jump This High? – Funny/Not Funny 7” (black / ???)

I picked up ‘Funny/Not Funny’ while flicking through the racks at Ritual Music and Books in Melbourne. I had checked out their EP ‘Deep Stationary’ (which I have previously posted about) from If You Make It.

How Do We Jump This High? supply us with 4 more poppy, melodic and at times twinkly, emo punk tracks with some lyrics that are sure to bum you out (in a good way…I guess).

Answer Key Records did a good job with this 7”. The jacket is silver screen printed onto a blue card which looks pretty neat. For a first release, they have done well.

FFO: Latterman, Get Bent, Thousandaires and Potboiler

Madonna – Vouge 7” (black / ???)

‘Vouge’ was released as a single in 1990 by Sire as a single from Madonna’s soundtrack album ‘I’m Breathless’. The B-side is ‘Keep It Together’.

Madonna – Dear Jessie 7” (black / ???)

1989 single vis Sire. ‘Dear Jessie’ is the fifth single from the album ‘ Like A Prayer’. The B-side is ‘Till Death Do Us Part’.

Propagandhi / I Spy – I’d Rather Be Flag Burning

1995 split between these two political Canadian punk bands. I’m pretty damn excited about Propagandhi’s addition to the Fest 11 line up. Hopefully we manage to catch them.
