Here We Ghost – Old Habits Die Hard

Pop punk with breakdowns from Perth. I saw these guys play when they supported Polar Bear Club at HQ. They are now broken up.

FFO: Four Year Strong and A Day To Remember

Heights – Dead Ends

Heights combine post and metallic hardcore to create their own distinctive sound. ‘Dead Ends’ is Heights’ first full length. These 10 songs are played with a hell of a lot of passion and conviction, making this a pretty intense listen. It sounds like each member has thrown everything they have into these songs. Though at times this is a little samey, this is a very good album.

FFO: Architects, Dead Swans and Gallows

Heights – The Land, The Ocean, The Distance

Heights are a post hardcore/metalcore band out of Britain. I don’t really listen to too many bands like Heights but I thoroughly enjoyed this EP. The only problem I have with this is that there are no physical copies (this EP was put up for free download by the band and I can’t find the link) and this EP is way too short.

I caught Heights when they toured Australia and even supported them in my band at the time. They are extremely passionate live band and these recordings don’t really do them justice. They are all round nice guys as well to top it off. Check this band out.

FFO: Architects

Her Nightmare – Come Anarchy, Come Ruin

Not much has changed between ‘No Heaven, No Hell’ and ‘Come Anarchy, Come Ruin’. More of the same heavy hardcore with plenty of breakdowns to mosh to.

FFO: Samara, Shot Point Blank and Day of Contempt

Her Nightmare – No Heaven, No Hell

Mosh heavy hardcore with plenty of breakdowns.

FFO: Samara, Shot Point Blank and Parkway Drive

Her Nightmare – Her Nightmare

2003 self titled EP from Melbourne’s Her Nightmare. Early 00’ mosh hardcore with breakdowns released by Sightline Records. The artwork for this EP is absolutely horrible.

FFO: Samara

Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys - Part II

German power metal from 1988 packed full of riffs, solos and pretty cheesy.

FFO: Blind Guardian and Iron Maiden.

Headless Horsemen – Unconscious On Arrival 7” (black / ???)

Headless Horsemen were a shortlived hardcore band from Hornsby, Sydney with members of Meataxe, Fistful, Dot Dot Dot and Nintendo Police. Raw, fast and thrashy with a distinctive Australian feel. Released via Gash Records. Good stuff.

Hell Money – I (26/100)

I picked this up at the counter of Poison City Records when I was in Melbourne for the Poison City Weekender.

Hell Money come from South Wales and play punk rock with a touch of hardcore thrown in. I knew nothing of them before reading an interview with them in Jerk Store #10 (quality zine worth checking out). Members of Hell Money are involved in other bands including Struck A Nerve, Little Red Ambulance, Hunger Artist, A Thousand Arrows and Goodtime Boys, all of which I have absolutely no clue who they are. They also booked a DIY tour of Australia, which I unfortunately missed due to not finding out about it until the tour had ended.

I’m growing to this EP quite abit.

Hellogoodbye – When We First Met 7” (beer bottle / ???)

This is mygirlfriend’s 7”. I guess Hellogoodbye are maturing by stepping away from the key boards and now writing boring ‘indie’ songs.

Hellogoodbye – Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!

Full length from 2006. Off kilter pop rock/punk with a shit tonne of auto tune. This is really fucking annoying.

FFO: 3OH!3

Hellogoodbye – Hellogoodbye

Debut EP from 2004. Off kilter pop rock/punk. Not a fan of this. I’m going to listen to Reggie and the Full Effect instead.

Heavens – Patent Pending

This is a kind of depressing record. A collaboration between Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio and Josiah Steinbrick or F-Minus.

I picked this up after hearing ‘Another Night’ on a compilation, and ‘Another Night’ is probably the best song on this album.

FFO: Alkaline Trio and Brand New

Heartsounds – Until We Surrender LP (clear turquoise /255)

I’ve slowly found these songs becoming stuck in my head. During the day at work I find myself humming these songs, I’ve found myself selecting their records to listen to more and more.

Heartsounds come from San Francisco and play fast and techy modern day punk rock with a male/female dynamic. Heartsounds were formed out of the ashes of Light This City (Laura Nichol and Ben Murray’s metal band).

Until We Surrender’ was released through both Epitaph (CD) and Creator Destructor (vinyl). The vinyl looks great. A glossy gatefold jacket with amazing artwork by Black Axe (as usual) and clear turquoise wax, limited to 255.

My girlfriend, Jade, has this LP on pink, which is also limited 255. Together we have both colours of the first press.

Heartsounds are also playing Fest 11 this year, which Jade and I are attending. Very excited!

Heathen – Breaking The Silence

1987 debut from first wave Bay Area thrash metalers Heathen. This is some solid heavy metal thrash. Great riffs, memorable vocals and solos aplenty.

I am a casual listener of thrash so don’t grill me on my FFO too hard.

FFO: Iron Maiden, Annihilator and Blind Guardian

Hear The Sirens – Lets Say All The Things We Never Said Before

Mixing pop punk and melodic punk rock together to make a pretty decent EP.

Worth checking out.

FFO: No Trigger, Crime In Stereo and Polar Bear Club

Hear The Sirens – Rebel Hearts Lost

Hear The Sirens play pop punk with an edge. The songs on this full length are passionate and sincere, backed with a fast tempo. All round pretty enjoyable.

FFO: No Trigger, Strike Anywhere and Polar Bear Club

Headaches – Headaches

Queensland’s Headaches play melodic punk rock at its best. This Self titled album/EP provides us with three new songs and the five songs from the demo via Arrest Records. I wish more people knew about this band.

Get this and sing a long.

FFO: The Gifthorse, Lifetime and Kid Dynamite

Headaches - Demo

Being a big fan of The Gifthorse it’s only natural to have an unhealthy love for Headaches. Featuring current and ex members of The Gifthorse, Against, Army Of Champions, Reach Out and Values Here, Brisbane’s Headaches fill the void that Gifthorse left when they broke up. Melodic punk rock at its best.

If anyone has a hardcopy of this that they are willing to let go, let me know.

FFO: The Gifthorse and Kid Dynamite

Haymaker – Haymaker

Angry, bitter and full of hate. This is stripped down, back to basics hardcore that will rip you apart with no hesitation.

Great artwork by Pushead.

FFO: Integrity, Left For Dead and His Hero Is Gone

Haymaker – Love The Music, Hate The Kids

Pissed as hell and out for blood. Fast, no bullshit hardcore.

FFO: Integrity, Left For Dead and His Hero Is Gone

Haymaker – Fuck America

Blazing and raw hardcore drenched in hatred from Canada and a cover of Anthrax’s ‘Caught In A Mosh’. This scares the shit outta me. I like it.

FFO: Integrity and Left For Dead

Have Heart – Songs To Scream At The Sun

Have Heart take everything up a notch with ‘Songs To Scream At The Sun’. The raw passion and emotion, the quality of the song writing, the messages, the lyrics, everything. This is an intense listen. You need this.

Have Heart – The Things We Carry

Straight edge hardcore at its best directly from Boston, Massachusetts. ‘The Things We Carry’ is a raw and emotional full length carrying powerful messages. Intelligent lyrics and every chord incites a fury of excitement.

FFO: Bane, Verse and Champion

Have Heart – What Counts

Have Heart are/were a breath of fresh air. There is a sincere conviction in their songs and their  messages. Released in 2004, ‘What Counts’ is an extremely passionate version of traditional hardcore but with a new twist.

FFO: Bane, In My Eyes and Champion

The Haunted – Revolver

The fourth album by The Haunted, released in 2004. Peter Dolving is back on vocals. Both Dolving and Aro (who fronted on the previous album One Kill Wonder) have a similar hardcore vocal style. As with One Kill Wonder, I thought this album was OK. I’m not going out of my way to search for any Haunted material.

FFO: Slayer and At The Gates.

The Haunted – One Kill Wonder

The third album by Swedish metal band The Haunted. Released in 2003. Aggressive riffs and hardcore oriented vocals. This is ok. Not great. Just ok.

FFO: Slayer and At The Gates.
